Josephine Makhanya Primary was named after the dedicated district community nurse who served in Adams Mission for over 23 years even when she was pensioned. The school was established in 1987 as a Pre-Primary. In 2005 was then developed as a Primary sports school of excellence with grade 1 and other grades consecutively up to the grade seven. The school is based in the rural area of Adams Mission approximately 10km from the N3 highway and 40km South of Durban with a disadvantage community whereby most of the parents are unemployed and rely on children’s grants and most of the children are orphans. The school is also under an Initiative towards the fight against high involvement of the youth in anti-social activities such as drugs, crime and pre-mature sexual activities which consequently lead to infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS.The Primary school is strategically centrally situated next to other schools,library and community hall. The school also acquired sister Pre-primary “tecoma” in Winklespruit since 1995 in overcoming the ever challenges of early Childhood development (ECD). Our school also host cluster monthly meetings for planning and sharing ideas.
Our school as a Primary Sport school of Excellence in partnership with Adams College, the Sport School of Excellence for high school education and four Durban based school: Durban Girls College, Durban Boys High, Westville Boys High and Glenwood Boys High aiming unearthing a hidden talent through sports which will motivate our children to excel and reach high for their dreams by being awarded sport scholarships up to tertiary level in the US.
The development of the “whole” child with quality all rounded education to honour the uniqueness of each child in his or her abilities, talents and to think critically and creatively and become empowered to develop into good leaders and decision makers.
